Steel or cast iron swarf is often quoted as a throw-away scrap product of low value. Because of its low density, contamination by oil etc, it is less desirable for remelting than "heavy" scrap. Only in times of scrap shortage is it viewed with much favour by the steel makers. The very nature of swarf suggests that it might be possible to reduce the chip length by some simple means and produce a material not unlike powder. The attraction of such a process is that there is a very considerable margin between swarf price and powder price. At the present time the gap is not less than ? 160 per ton, i.e. a ratio of 1:9. At times this ratio has been as high as 1:20.
