Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP), operating since 1892, and LA Sanitation & Environment's (LASAN) core mission has championed the protection of public health and environment as a department within the City of Los Angeles (City). Our environmental charge has evolved through the years garnering our organization a strong standing as a world-class environmental leader. HWRP is one of the largest treatment plants in the world with an average dry weather capacity of 450 mgd. The Hyperion BioEnergy Facility (HBEF) was commissioned in early 2017 at cost of $170M and uses biogas to power two gas turbine electrical generators for the production of electricity on site. Hot exhaust from the gas turbines is used to create steam, powering a steam turbine and providing heating steam for Hyperion's solids digestion process. HBEF provides renewable source of energy for HWRP, amounting up to 27 megawatts (MW) of power generation and 70,000 pounds of steam per hour. The construction and installation took approximately 28 months. Two Solar Mars 100 engines were installed, each rated at 11,347 kW of electrical power with a heat rate of 10,365 Btu/kWh. Both turbines are dual fuel (biogas and natural gas). Natural gas is used/mixed as needed when biogas volumes are low. Biogas is treated with vessels containing a special adsorption media that removes siloxanes, volatile organic compounds, and other impurities in the gas. HBEF incorporates catalytic oxidation (CO) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for carbon monoxides and oxides of nitrogen emissions control, respectively. Three and a half (3.5) years of performance data, air emissions numbers of the two turbines, and operations and maintenance (O&M) challenges will be presented for LASAN renewable energy source.
