The well, dating from 1954, began leaking on Oct. 23 and is now venting between 40 million and 62 million cubic feet per day into the atmosphere. A SoCalGas spokesman said an earlier attempt to plug the well failed because of ice blockage in the wellbore and pressure that was averaging 2,700 pounds per square inch.
