The purposes of this paper are to identify and discuss best available technology measures to limit soil erosion and to provide sediment control measures for a large construction site in U.K. Construction sites are required to meet pre-development water quantity and quality conditions to minimize their environmental impacts. A major challenge for all construction sites is to limit erosion of disturbed land and control downstream transfer of sediment. Because erosion and deposition processes in nature are highly uncertain and depend on many site and environmental factors, adequate sediment characterization and quantification are technically challenging but are crucial to demonstrate compliance with permitting limits at all stages of a project. The paper provides an approach to estimate the amount of erosion and a framework for the selection, design, and optimal integration of best available technology measures to achieve a sustainable plan for the management of erosion and sediment carryover for a large, complex, construction project. Specifically, the paper documents the evaluation and engineering processes for erosion and sediment control including proper interpretation and dissemination of construction phase water discharge requirements; site meteorological, hydrological, and soils conditions; estimation of influx and efflux of total suspended solids concentration; and selection and design of sustainable treatment trains for erosion and sediment control.
