CFRP and CIPP Pipeline Repair Reliability-It's All in the Resin!

Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) have long been used for rehabilitation of piping systems suffering from degradation, using polymer reinforced composites, extending the service life far beyond that envisaged in the original design. While advancements in these technologies have typically concentrated on the physical and geometrical properties of the fiber, the properties of the binding resins, along with constructability of the rehabilitation techniques, both ultimately key to performance, have largely been ignored, thus inhibiting the use of CFRP and CIPP for nonstandard applications. This paper focuses on innovations in resins and constructability which could permit a broader application of CFRP and CIPP for unique applications such as elevated process temperatures. In addition, this paper attempts to highlight the design and installation issues relevant to CFRP and CIPP and to provide stakeholders with the information critical to decision-making for ensuring successful rehabilitations.
