The New 1.2 l Turbo Engine for the Opel Astra: The 3rd Generation of 3-Cylinder Engines

Opel and General Motors (GM) have launched 2 successful generations of 3-cylinderengines. With the knowledge of more than 20 years of 3-cylinder work, Opel and GeneralMotors have developed an all new engine family of 3-cylinder engines to be evenmore efficient and to create more fun to drive while being ready for electrification. Stateof-the-art technologies such as central direct injection, variable valve timing, a lightweightaluminium cylinder-block and a two-stage variable oil pump but also a combustionchamber optimization are key efficiency enablers. These engines are not onlyclimate-friendly, they also represent a new benchmark for refinement for 3-cylinderengines. To exceed market requirements in all global markets, this new engine familyis setup with the principle of a set of building bricks, so that different component setscan deliver the best solution for the individual market including electrification. The newengine family will explore further markets as North and South America.The intent of this paper is to review the European Market version of this engine familyin the Opel Astra. It features a displacement of 1.2 l and more fun to drive with 145 hpand 225 Nm while reducing the CO_2 in this vehicle significantly. This is going alongwith a weight reduction of the engine down to 94 kg (DIN). This generation of engineswill be showing once more that there is still potential in the development of the internalcombustion engine.
