Once up and running, the Angra 3 NPP will be the last-of-a-kind FRAMATOME builtplant based on the OEM KWU design of a Pre-Konvoi pressurized water reactor witha net output of 3965 MW_th and 1405 MW_el. On the other hand, the Angra 3 NPPwill be equipped with a modern state-of-the-art instrumentation and control (I&C)architecture, featuring operational and safety-significant monitoring and controlfunctions which are performed either fully automated or manually. The plant’s hybridcontrol room is equipped with computerized and conventional human-machineinterfaces (HMI), known as PICS (Process Information & Control System) and SICS(Safety Information & Control System) respectively. The application of the latestconcepts of human factors engineering (HFE) to their design serves to optimize theirsupport of reliable and efficient performance of operators’ tasks.The Angra 3 I&C takes the benefit of a well-proven and validated architecturedesigned to meet the requirements specified by plant process & safety engineeringand systems engineering. It enabled the evolution from the analog I&C towards thefully digital I&C realized via the FRAMATOME TELEPERM XS (for the safety-relatedfunctions) and SIEMENS SPPA-T2000 (for the operating-related functions).This presentation provides an overview of the resulting I&C architecture. It showsexemplarily the advantages of applying fully digital and automated instrumentation &control in order to improve the plant’s operability and availability.The lessons learned throughout the entire design transformation process from theformer analog I&C (as implemented within the Angra 2 NPP) towards the digital I&Csolution are presented as well, with special focus on the state-of-the-art hybridoperating control methodology.
