The comprehensive knowledge of the sensitivity of confined charges is important to successfully pass required STANAG 4439 safety tests: bullet impact (BI), fragment impact (FI), shaped charge jet impact (SCJI) and sympathetic reaction (SR). Also in the case of a non-contact explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) e.g. with a SCJ in a low order reaction it is necessary to know the reaction behaviour of the charge. Finally, our armed forces are more and more engaged in out-of-area missions and are hereby threatened by rockets, artillery shells and mortar grenades (RAM). Also here, it is essential to have a profound knowledge of the sensitivity behaviour of these RAMs to counter the threats (C-RAM). The immediate initiation of so called secondary high explosives (HE) can be only accomplished by shock waves - contrary to primary high explosives, where heating to high temperatures also leads to prompt initiation. The significant parameters influencing the shock sensitivity of secondary HEs were studied in [1]. In this paper the investigation was extended to munitions (cased HEs) and projectiles (not only shock waves). Numerous tests with a SCJ were already carried out and published in [2]. The topic of this work is to study the sensitivity of confined charges when attacked by different high-velocity projectiles.
