Measuring the Spatial Inequity Level of Public Transit Accessibility: Using a Spatial Exclusion Index Model

Many studies emphasize the equity of transportation distribution in entire countries or cities rather than in smaller study units (such as districts or communities). The latter could provide new perspective on inequity issues of accessibility at the planning stage and further the investigation of influence mechanism of accessibility equity. This study established a spatial exclusion index (SEI) model to evaluate accessibility equity of public transit for each traffic analysis zone (TAZ). The proposed SEI is further applied to quantify accessibility equity levels and spatial dependence of public transit for commuting and leisure in Kunming, China. Results of this study demonstrate the capabilities of using SEI to examine the accessibility equity level of public transit of each study unit. The results also indicate that the spatial inequity for commuting presents a primary "core-periphery" pattern, and the level of spatial inequity in public transit accessibility for leisure is poorer than for commuting.
