Biomechanical Devices Used for the Treatment of Open Bite Malocclusion

The anterior open bite is a malocclusion very difficult to treat due to its multifactorial etiology, as well as the increased tendency to relapse. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the types of orthodontic appliances used for open bite treatment and orthodontic treatment outcomes. The study sample consisted of the records of 52 patients diagnosed with open bite. The type of treatment used and the results of the treatment were analyzed. Statistical analysis of data records was performed using the program SPSS 20.0 for Windows, through descriptive statistics. For orthodontic treatment of anterior open bite were applied removable orthodontic appliances in 25% patients, fixed orthodontic appliances in 50% patients and combined orthodontic treatments in 25% patients. In the studied group it was observed the reduction of the open bite in 26.92% of the patients and its correction in 70.38% of the patients, following the application of the appliances to prevent the interposition of the tongue or the finger between the dental arches. The success and stability of open bite malocclusion treatment depends on the patient’s age, the severity of the malocclusion, the type of treatment used and the patient’s compliance.
