The article presents the potential of applying vibroacoustic signals to the diagnostics of vehicles (although the main focus is placed on the power unit). The authors have intended to demonstrate the practical aspects of using vibroacoustic diagnostics in the light of contemporary findings in the area of signal processing. The article begins with the definition of a “signal”, as well as a summary of its long-discussed classification and properties. Subsequently, vibration measurement methods are presented and optimal methods for particular cases are indicated. The article then presents basic filtering methods which allow proper diagnostics. The investigations presented in this article are the result of a many-year research cooperation between the Technical University of Varna and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
