The field of the ground wave created by a vertical electric dipole over an electrically inhomogeneous Earth’s surface is considered. The ground wave field is characterized by the stability of the phase structure and propagation over long distances due to the diffraction property. Such a field is of interest at distances from the emitter, when the influence of waves reflected from the ionosphere can be neglected. For long radio paths with relatively “poor” conductivity, it is proposed to calculate the attenuation function of the ground wave field using the Kalinin-Feinberg’s formula for electrically inhomogeneous radio paths. At the initial homogeneous section of the path, the attenuation function is calculated from the model of the “flat” surface of the Earth using Sommerfeld’s formulas.
