Insulators are one of the most widely used electrical equipment in power systems. Long-term under the influence of stresses such as electricity and heat, transmission line insulators will have breakage defects, which will cause their insulation performance to decline, and even cause grid accidents in severe cases. Traditional line inspections are mainly manual visual observation, and the detection rate of this defect is affected by manual experience. The solar-blind ultraviolet imaging detection method has high sensitivity to discharge and electric field distortion, but the time accumulation effect of ultraviolet imager will cause the lack of relevant information. A detection method was proposed based on the combination of discharge acoustic emission and ultraviolet image. In the laboratory, the acoustic and ultraviolet discharge image characteristics of 110kV suspended porcelain insulator string are studied when the umbrella skirts are defected. The test results show that the detection method can effectively detect the breakage defects of some insulators, so as to effectively diagnose and prevent the damaged defects of line insulators.
