The adoption of global energy interconnection (GEI) standards will transform energy development, enable the optimal allocation of clean energy, and ensure the economic and efficient operation of interconnected power grids. In this paper, to guide the work of GEI standards, ensure the needs of the market are addressed, and identify sources of investment to fund ongoing standards development activities, the progress and application status of domestic and international standards are reviewed and a standard architecture for smart grids is described. The rationale and architecture of a conceptual model of the GEI standard system are subsequently presented. In addition, a standard roadmap depicting the 13 GEI technical areas is discussed, and an overview of the phased goals of the GEI development project is provided.
