Digital publishing offers the potential to raise the quality level for short-run printing, and to also enable the printing of documents that are highly variable in data content and layout. To realize this potential, it is necessary to automate the increasingly complex workflows arising in digital publishing business. This paper presents our vision of an overall system to automate the digital publishing workflow and discusses substantial progress in developing the components of such a system. The proposed digital publishing workflow enactment system combines tools for workflow modeling, scheduling, and artifact recognition. The result is a new kind on integrated platform that can efficiently automate the workflow of a print shop. This platform can help eliminate many of the time consuming steps currently being perform in a manual and ad-hoc fashion by employees at traditional print shops.
