摘要

Articles about cellular processes and behaviors have grown from around 8,000 a year to 17,000 over the past ten years. To use the information in these articles effectively, cellular process and behavior descriptions must be complete, detailed, and without ambiguity. Biomedical ontologies address the need for consistent descriptions across species and aim to facilitate computational uses of biomedical information-for indexing and retrieval of data, data integration and exchange, and knowledge discovery. The Gene Ontology (GO), the most widely used bio-ontology, has one of its three controlled vocabularies committed solely to biological processes. Despite the success of GO and other bio-ontologies, cellular processes and behaviors are still crudely described and quantified.
