Recently the recycling of wastes is expected strongly from the viewpoint of the environmental defense and the effective use of resources. Among many kinds of wastes, waste biomass is focused the spotlight of attention as a renewable resource. Water (the critical temperature =374°C, critical pressure=22.1MPa) in high temperature and pressure is a benign solvent for the decomposition of organic substances and is suitable for the treatment of waste biomass containing around 80% moisture. In this study, we investigated the applicability of water in high temperature and pressure to the treatment of wet waste biomass of livestock excrement and to the recovery of energy. The oxidation in high pressure superheated steam converted livestock excrement to carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water. The optimum treatment conditions were investigated using a butch-type reactor.
