High performance, solid rocket motors, such as those used in strategic missiles, have used 3-D cylindrically woven carbon-carbon composites as the Integral Throat and Entrance (ITE) material to maximize their performance by reducing throat erosion. Recently, a low cost carbon-carbon material, using a 4-D weave architecture, has been tested and qualified for both strategic and tactical SRM's. This material exhibited improved erosion resistance when compared to 3-D cylindrically woven components under identical firing conditions.
