A 60 HP brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) pump drive is toreplace a wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) drive in a localwaste-water treatment plant. This paper discusses a simple,microcontroller based search algorithm to maximize the efficiency of theBDFM pump drive. The algorithm minimizes the total input power that issupplied to the drive at any speed and load condition. This algorithmcan be implemented on the same process controller as used for pump drivespeed control. While the scheme is described for a pump driveapplication. It can be used for any BDFM adjustable speed drive. Controldesign and implementation details are presented. Experimental resultsbased on a laboratory prototype illustrate speed control and efficiencymaximization
