A conceptual design is described for a fluid film bearing tester which overcomes many of the problems of using conventional instrumentation and test methods in the cryogenic environment. The design includes a thermally isolated load cell table for measuring reaction forces, and magnetic bearning rotor support and excitation. Frequency response and uncertainty analyses are presented fro tests of 2 inch and 6 inch bearings at 9,600 rpm. The results indicate adequate bearing loads and rotor/stator motion for excitation frequencies from 0 to 1 kHz, with transfer function uncertainties of 6 percent (amplitude) and 2 degrees (phase).
