A test method and test apparatus conceptual design has been developed which utilizes calibrated magnetic bearings in determining the rotordynamic characteristics of fluid film elements. The design of the test rig is flexible in order to accommodate a variety of test articles such as hydrostatic bearings, foil bearings, annular seals, and pump impellers. Since testing of bearings, and seals is fairly well developed technology, this effort has focused on the use of the apparatus for characterization of pump hydrodynamic components.
