The paper presents the first results of a comparison between twodifferent motorway traffic models. The purpose is to operate acomparative evaluation of potentialities and limits in the two differentapproaches, by applying the models on a large scale motorway networkwith a complete traffic data base. The two different modellingapproaches are: a model based on microscopic traffic theory and amacroscopic stochastic experimental model. Model performances have beenverified comparing some simulation results to the real travel times andtraffic flows measured on the network, in “noncongested trafficconditions”. Travel times of all vehicles from origin todestination have been measured as well as all origin and destinationflows by using data from the toll collection system (entrance and exittime for each vehicle). Models potentialities and limits in large-scaleapplications are also discussed
