A diagnosis using qualitative reasoning is applicable to thediagnosis of building air conditioning systems such that theirconfiguration is various. In this technique, a target system is modeledqualitatively, and possible patterns of behaviour of the target modelare generated by the qualitative reasoning. By comparing the results ofreasoning with the real measured values, a faulty part is identified. Wepropose a stochastic qualitative reasoning method. In this method, theexistence probability is introduced to prevent the increasing possiblebehaviours of the model. Through the qualitative reasoning process, thestates having negligible probability are eliminated. We have appliedthis method to fault diagnosis of a building air conditioning system andconfirmed its effectiveness
