The authors present measured characteristics for a prototype motorof static torque versus angular position for various levels of current,which demonstrate the high electromechanical torque that may be achievedin a machine of the VRPM type. Secondly, a design method is introducedand briefly described, that enables the proportions of the stator teeth,air-gap, and rotor magnets, to be approximately optimised for maximumtorque.
