This paper presents a different approach for a synchronousreluctance motor design with a radially-laminated rotor. The stator hasa standard three-phase induction motor design. The rotor is laminatedradially with an anisotropic permeable material leading to the requireddifference in the d- and q-axis permeance. The finite element methodproves to be a powerful tool for the investigation and evaluation of thebehaviour. One problem arising with the finite element approach isrelated to the modelling of the magnetic structure of the rotor as theanisotropic behaviour of the material has to be taken into account.
