We study the impact of the anticipated channel release (ACR)strategy in the performance of multi-rate transmission mobilemicrocellular networks. The ACR strategy takes advantage ofbreak-before-make hard handoff characteristics to improve systemcapacity. We obtain analytical expressions for new call blocking andhandoff failure probabilities in the full access system using themultidimensional birth-and-death process. From these expressions, weobserve that the anticipated channel release strategy increases thesystem capacity to m channels, where m is the number of basic channelsrequired by a high-rate traffic call. Moreover, we note that the use ofACR improves the forced termination probability for high-rate trafficcalls. Also, we evaluate the performance of the maximum packingalgorithm for multi-rate transmission traffic calls under two differentsimulation topologies. These are the wrapped around topology, whichminimizes the boundary effect, and the unwrapped topology, which ignoresit. Simulation results obtained using the unwrapped topology compared tothose obtained using the wrapped one differ no more than 1.5%
