This paper presents an approach for control and monitoring ofdiscrete events systems. We show how it is possible to preserve theadvantages of a hierarchical control structure for process monitoringpurposes. The limitations of the monitoring system induced by the toolsclassically used for the specification of the control sequences areexposed. A new approach of knowledge representation is proposed: adatabase model is associated to the hierarchical control and monitoringstructure. In this context, the main monitoring functions become morepowerful and are able to treat most of the erroneous situationsfollowing from a process failure
