Algorithms and architectures for the analysis of road-trafficmovements

Under certain circumstances automatic data-capture systems basedupon image processing techniques and applied to road-traffic situationsoffer significant advantage over more conventional techniques such asthose employing inductive-loop detectors in that they are portable anddo not require installation into the carriageway. The techniques havefurther potential in the areas of incident detection, especially inmotorway situations. They also offer the possibility of in-depthinvestigation of such situations as vehicle turning movements andvehicle tracking more generally. This paper describes recent progresswhich has been made in considering effective segmentation techniques onone hand subsequent tracking analysis on the other. The objective isprogress toward economical and versatile target architectures operatingin real-time. In both cases performance characteristics based uponsimulation are presented
