Problems in the (lack of) theory of RS and GIS are summarised anda model based approach proposed. A theory of geoinformatics in 4D isformulated which defines relations between entities in space and time ina top down manner for handling 4D world models, including informationquality. A subtheory for image analysis replaces attempts to imitate thebehaviour of image interpreters. It contains additional knowledge aboutRS and updates models in the 4 dimensional GIS
