The role of statistically designed experiments in conceptualaerospace vehicle design

The approach used in a propulsion system design optimization studyfor an advanced space transportation vehicles is described. The Taguchimethod, based on statistically designed experiments, is utilized toconduct a series of parametric trade studies to optimize the vehicleweight. The role of Taguchi methods on conceptual aerospace vehicledesign is discussed. The Taguchi method provided a systematic andefficient methodology for solving multiparameter propulsion/vehicleoptimization problems with far less effort than would be required forfull factorial design
