Electromagnetic interference in medical devices: Health Canada'spast and current perspectives and activities

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from radiofrequency sources maycause a variety of medical devices to malfunction, compromising patientsafety. An overview of Health Canada's efforts to ensure that medicaldevices are safe from EMI is presented. Health Canada has identified andassessed the following EMI issues: interference from wireless local areanetwork systems, electronic article surveillance systems, metaldetectors, and Bluetooth technology. Health Canada is assessing thesusceptibility of medical devices to EMI from these sources to developsuitable electromagnetic compatibility requirements and other solutionsto minimize risk to patients
