The occurrence of partial discharges in an insulating systemconsisting of lapped uniaxially oriented polyethylene tapes impregnatedwith dodecylbenzene oil and their effect were studied with uniform andnonuniform field electrode arrangements. The effect of varioustemperatures on the breakdown stress of the insulating system wasinvestigated for the first arrangement. A correlation between dischargeenergy and material damage was established for the nonuniform fieldarrangement. The discharge energy delivered to the test object seems tobe a much more useful discharge parameter than the largest partialdischarge magnitude. The influence of temperature on the breakdownstress was also studied. The present insulation system performedsatisfactorily up to 70° C. It started deteriorating, however, at90° C
