Feasibility of Hythane Recovery from Recirculated Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste and Paper Waste

Food waste (FW) and paper waste (PW) are the two major components in municipal solid waste (MSW). Anaerobic digestion is the promising method that recovers the fuel gases of hydrogen and methane (hythane) from waste reduction. In this study, the recirculated temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (R-TPAD) was operated continuously to treat the MSW that contained 0 %, 20 %, 40 % and 50 % (TS) of PW and the rest of FW. As a result, the volatile solids (VS) destructions were 84.9 %, 83.1%, 78.1 % and 78.4 % when PW were 0 %, 20 %, 40 % and 50 %, respectively. Besides, their hythane yields were 476, 452, 385, 407 NL/kg-VS, respectively. The hydrogen content of the harvested hythane were 10.5%, 17.4%, 14.1% and 193%, respectively, which maintained in the optimal range of 10~20%. In conclusion, the R-TPAD process was feasible to recover hythane from the reduction of MSW when PW contents were lower than 50%.
