Organic pollutants in leachate from municipal solid waste landfills are notoriously difficult to treat by biological processes, while advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is an effective treatment method. Atmospheric non-thermal plasma is an emerging technique in water treatment technology. In this study, the improvement of wastewater quality using by atmospheric non-thermal plasma produced from the AC discharge processes in various oxygen-argon mixed gas ration was investigated. In our experiment, 300 mL of pH-adjusted water sample was treated with a 4.5 kVrms 50 Hz AC neon sign transformer power source for 80 minutes. Some key parameters of water quality includes the level of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS), color, and humic substances were measured before and after. The results showed the reduction of difficult-biodegraded organic pollutions like HA were greatly enhanced by the active species generated from argon-oxygen non-thermal plasma treatment. It could be confirms that argon-oxygen plasma generated acidity in water as reduce amount of refractory organic pollutant in wastewater.
