A Compact System for Blood Impedance Measurements for ROS Evaluation

The aim of this research is to provide a compact, low cost and reliable impedance measurement system for the analysis of biological fluids, and specifically of blood samples, based on impedance spectroscopy measurements in the frequency range 1 kHz-100 kHz. In particular, the applicability of the developed instrument to the detection of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in blood is explored. ROS have been known to display prominent roles in the pathogenesis of several acute and chronic disorders and in inflammatory conditions. In this paper we show that the proposed system can provide similar information about the ROS concentration in blood subpopulations as other expensive and time consuming techniques, leading to great time savings, and opening the possibility of screening programs based on oxidative stress monitoring.
