This paper presents an overview of the performances of a novel microfluidic sensing platform that incorporates glass micro-capillaries with rectangular cross-section. A flexible measuring configuration realized with single mode optical fibers allows remote, non-contact optical read-out in the near infrared wavelength region of absolute values of group refractive index or of refractive index variations, for example related to increasing concentrations of solutions flowing through the capillary.
