Mapping annual forest cover for Vietnam during 2015-2018 by using PALSAR-2 and ancillary data

This study aims to map annual forest cover for Vietnam during 2015-2018 using PALSAR-2 ScanSAR time series data in combination with MODIS NDVI 250 m, SRTM 30 m and reference data taken by visualization on Google Earth images. The study employed the KDE algorithm with the land cover classification approach to finally produce foreston-forest (FNF) maps. The resulted FNF maps reached 91 % to 92 % of overall accuracy which is about 10 % more than FNF maps of JAXA for Vietnam. This study again clarified the potential of SAR time series data for mapping annual forest cover with the support of optical images.
