This paper aims at demonstrating the advantages of performing smart grids monitoring in a decentralized way instead of the centralized strategies currently used in distribution system operation centers. Decentralized architectures based on an Embedded State Estimator (ESE) are proposed and compared to a centralized one. The comparisons were performed using the real large scale Distribution System (DS) of the city of Londrina, Paraná belonging to COPEL (a Brazilian utility). The obtained results demonstrated that using the ESE to manage information of SMs at LV networks reduces in a considerably way the amount of data transiting the communication network and the computational requirements to perform real-time monitoring of DSs.
