The natural space environment is characterized by many complex and subtle phenomena that can be hostile to spacecraft. The effects of these phenomena can impact spacecraft design, development, and operations. Space systems have become increasingly more susceptible to the space environment as composite materials and smaller, faster electronics have come into greater usage. These current trends make an understanding of the natural space environment essential in order to accomplish overall mission objectives. This is especially true in the current climate of better/cheaper/faster.
