The decades-old electron beam fluorescence technique is reviewed in an historical perspective with an emphasis on experiments relating to hypersonic aerothermodynamics. A compilation of research activity identifies the areas in high-speed flows where electron beam fluorescence measurement techniques can be successfully applied, A variety of hypersonic and short-duration flow facility applications are also presented, and recent activity relating to electron beams is discussed.
