A generalized version of the two-person guessing game Mastermindis analyzed asymptotically. We strengthen the results of Chvatal (193)and demonstrate the value of adaptive questions: by using the answers toearly questions in the formulation of later questions, the guesser cansignificantly reduce the number of questions that must be asked
