Proposes that business incubators can be natural and valuableextensions of engineering schools. This paper reviews experience gainedthrough the Cape Technikon's chemical engineering business developmentprogramme. It recommends a return to technical education byentrepreneurs. Engineering education is directed at freedom frompoverty, disease and oppression. Very often, those countries that neededucation the most have the least to spend on it. Economic developmentrequires a combination of engineering, entrepreneurial and managementskills. The association of entrepreneurs with engineering schoolsthrough business incubators can result in great mutual benefit. Peopleinvolved in these business units contribute towards the needs ofeducation in return for access to high-technology facilities andexpertise. This makes the schools much less vulnerable to cutbacks inexternal funding
