摘要

Spoilers of large commercial aircrafts are currently realized in composite sandwich design.Nowadays, research is focused on monolithic highly integrated composite structures, whichsubstitute such sandwich designs, mainly because of commercial aspects. From a structuralpoint of view, this is difficult to justify. Sandwich designs are perfectly suitable for structuresexposed to bending moments like aircraft spoilers. However, monolithic structures can beproduced cheaper and integration of sub-components in one single part is easier. Two monolithicalternatives, which fulfill all structural requirements, are considered in terms of appliedmaterials, manufacturing processes and the resulting manufacturing costs. Those are comparedto a standard sandwich spoiler to provide a holistic view on the selection of designs,processes and materials for future aircraft spoilers.
