Electrodeposition of Lead from Chloride Melts

Pure lead can be produced by electrowinning or electrorefining inmolten salts. Another potential application of lead deposition isrelated to the recycling of waste. Steady state cathodic currentversus potential relations were found to be linear in pure moltenPbCl_2 at 550 - 585 °C. On a tungsten microelectrode the linearbehaviour was measured over a wide range; up to 700 A cm~(-2) and3 V. The rate of the Pb deposition reaction is believed to becontrolled by the transport of Pb containing species by migration inthe electrolyte. In dilute solutions of PbCl_2 in molten KCl-LiCl at400 °C, the cathodic deposition of lead was found to be diffusioncontrolled with the influence of nucleation on substrates of glassycarbon, tungsten and molybdenum.
