We present a novel approach for facilitating fast and comprehensive energy performanceassessment during architectural design competitions utilizing Building Information Modelling, an iterativeworkflowand an integrated environmental performance assessment toolset. In collaboration with all participatingarchitectural offices, the approach is applied in an actual design competition for a high-rise building outside ofZurich. In addition to the assessment of environmental performance, the resulting Building Information Modelsare used for evaluation of functional zoning, spatial economy and quantity take-offs, thus providing a richerdatabase for competition decision making. The approach was considered beneficial by the participating architectsin terms of integration and comprehension of environmental parameters as well as by the project developerfor the fast evaluation and validation of environmental and economic performance.
