Energy Efficient Design (EED) of new industrial facilitieshas been an important focus area in Danish and Irish energyefficiency programs. Significant energy savings have beenachieved by applying a systematic approach from the veryearly stages of the design process. Even well-designed plantshave achieved energy savings of the magnitude 30 % or moreapplying EED.The basic methodology – based on the "the Onion" diagram– aims at targeting all aspects related to energy efficient operationof a future plant. The methodology includes systematicanalysis of user requirements (URS), planned process types, detailedplant and utility designs, control strategy as well as maintenanceand housekeeping-activities. The methodology detailsspecific activities to implement during the design process on aphase-by-phase basis.This paper describes which barriers towards energy efficiencyare typically encountered when planning and designing anew industrial facility, and how the methodology deals withthese barriers. In addition, recommended EED-activities aredescribed during the planning and design stages on a phase-byphasebasis. The design of an autoclave system in a healthcareindustry, including the associated utility systems, is used as acomprehensive example.The paper further describes experiences gained from anumber of projects carried out in Western Europe since 2000including how to organize EED work and which practical experienceshave been gained. A number of case studies are describedincluding identified savings, payback periods and thedegree of implementation in the final design.The paper finally describes requirements for EED in theIPPC directive and which efforts that shall be carried out regardingEED according to the BAT note on energy efficiencyfor new industrial sites.
