Supervisory (SV) signal transmission techniques are proposed fortransmission systems with inline optical amplifiers. Several methods ofsending an SV signal over the same fiber along with the line signalpasses are examined. Transmission over 75 km along with a 1.8 Gb/s linesignal is confirmed by modulating the pump light power of the opticalamplifier (laser diode) with a 2 Mb/s bipolar signal, without degradingthe line signal. The remaining pump light unabsorbed by the amplifyingfiber carries the SV signal. Another method described is polarizationmodulation of line-signal light. A transmission experiment over a 1000km fiber through 14 optical amplifiers confirms the applicability ofpolarization modulation
