Multimedia applications, such as computer-based conferencingsystems, require the use of communications services providing lowtransmission delays and the integration of various media. The needs ofreal-time multimedia applications within the office environment areanalyzed. The needs of multimedia conferencing systems and imagebrowsing applications are considered. The analysis is done by takinginto account the use of current computer technologies and advancedpublic communications services. In particular, the use of availablecommunications facilities, i.e., T1 links and frame-relaying packet modeservices is analyzed. The main objective is to define systemconfigurations for supporting real-time multimedia office applicationsmaking use of public communications services
