Recent work on monolithic optical active filters and receiversbased on DFB (distributed feedback) or DBR (distributed Bragg reflector)laser diode structures is reviewed. Nonlinear dynamical effects underhigh-Q conditions and high input power are discussed. Throughthe coupled field and carrier dynamics, the state and dynamicalcharacteristics are studied. Device performance at different cavitylength, electrical bias, incoming signal level, frequency detuning, andsignal bandwidth is calculated for both ASK (amplitude-shift keying) andFSK (frequency-shift keying) input. The advantages of this device andcritical parameters for communication applications are discussed
