The carrierless (linear and nonlinear) equalization theory oftwo-dimensional digital signals perturbed by wire pair intersymbolinterference (ISI) and Gaussian-distributed near-end crosstalk (NEXT) orforeign thermal noise is developed, leading to the interpretation of thecarrierless AM/PM double sideband modulation technique. The potentialNEXT- and thermal-noise-limited throughput capabilities of uncodedlinearly and nonlinearly feedback-equalized carrierless AM/PM digitalsignals observed through twisted metallic pairs bundled in a multicoretransmission cable are examined. For each modulation technique andreceiver structure, theoretical comparisons are derived on the basis ofan information-rate versus baud rate optimization procedure. Curves andtables for a variety loop attenuation frequency characteristics indicatethat a trellis-coded (Tomlinson precoded) carrierless passband decisionfeedback equalizer is capable of accommodating all projected versions ofthe high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) data transmissionsystem
